Layer-Glazing Vase

The Layer-Glazing Vase explores the potential of spraying slip and clay marbling, combining both techniques to create a new style of ceramic object.  This method involves spraying colored slips onto the plaster mold to create marbled clay slabs. By using this technique, multiple layers of colors can be seen on the rim of the vase after assembling.

This project is also inspired by Xiang Qi, a unique Chinese traditional technique which is still in use in Jingdezhen. Studio Kae uses joint slips to attach nearly bone-dry clay slabs together to make a 3D form from a 2D slab. This traditional technique is not widely known these days, so this project aims to bring he Xiang Qi technique back to people’s attention.
